“HE’LL BE ALRIGHT,” Dr. Elaine Greene of the Baylor Scott and White Medical Center told the team. She was a black woman in her mid-forties, her twists neatly in a bun, her scrubs spotless. “Fortunately, it was just a graze and you guys did an excellent job slowing the bleeding. He’s all stitched up and in the recovery room. He needs to stay off his feet as much as possible to keep the wound from reopening. The nurse can take you to see him.”

“Thank you so much, doctor.”

One of the nurses took them down the hall and reminded them of the visiting hours before she returned to her desk. Unsurprisingly, Shannon was already on the phone even in his hospital bed, scribbling something down on the notepad from his ruined suit. He exchanged a few curt words with the person on the other side of the call before hanging up and addressing them. “What did the cops say?”

“Gee, it’s good to see you too,” Libby said, crossing her arms and glaring. “Mind thanking us for saving your life?”

Shannon gave her a thin smile. “Technically speaking, I wouldn’t have bled out for another hour or so.”

Libby grabbed a pillow from the empty bed beside him and moved towards him threateningly. Jack caught her shoulders, then admonished the agent. “Look, it’s been a long morning, alright? Can you not do the hard ass act right now?”

Shannon grunted. “I’m fine. Just a flesh wound.”

“Yeah, we got that part, Sir Black Knight,” Jack said, rolling his eyes. “Cops said the SUV’s driver is MIA, but he was headed west from what they got out of the few witnesses that saw him leave the scene. Heckle and Jeckle are still unconscious and in critical care right now, but that’s no surprise; they were following us at about seventy or eighty miles per hour. They may never wake up if the brain damage is too bad.”

“Meaning we’re not going to get anything unless we catch the driver,” Shannon said with a grimace. “What about the drone?”

“The cops are working with Yousef and the people on that street corner to see if someone saw what direction it came from,” Kamala said. “However, we’ve got a working theory about it.”

“Which is?”

She narrowed her eyes. “Remember the incident with the mimic dragon last year? A drone intervened. It was the same model as the one we saw today. Guess who owned that drone?”

“...son of a bitch.”
